Keeping active has been the backbone of my life. As I have got older, I have varied my fitness activities to allow me to stay healthy and ‘fit for life’.
As a youth I played many sports, eventually focusing on judo. I had the benefit of advice from many experts who created a planned development programme to help me progress from county, national to Commonwealth Judo Champion (U78 Kg) in 1990 and 1992. After retiring from competitive judo at the age of 29 years old, I learnt how to train smartly and create a lifelong approach to maintaining my personal fitness.
I am able to apply my substantial wealth of experience in developing and maintaining my own personal fitness to helping FitnessWorks clients to achieve their own goals. I am also qualified in the care of individuals’ rehabilitation following illness or injury, and fully registered on the GP Referral Programme.
My degree in Sports Coaching (Auckland, New Zealand) gave me a good knowledge of physiology and the psychological aspects of exercise and fitness training.
I feel honoured to have played international rugby for Croatia (my father’s place of birth) and after moving to England in 2007, continued to play rugby union at National League 2. My UK level 2 rugby coaching qualification, together with substantial on-the-field experience has provided many useful skills as the strength & conditioning coach at Shelford Rugby Club.
What I love about my job is the opportunity to help clients achieve their personal health and fitness goals (such as weight loss, sports specific, stress reduction, or injury rehabilitation), by following a structured exercise and nutrition programme. It is very rewarding to see a transformation in not only their physical appearance and level of fitness, but also their increase in confidence and a developed positive outlook towards exercising and life in general.
Rachel McCarthy – Yoga Teacher
I have been practising yoga for over 10 years. My first experience of yoga was a Bikram (hot yoga) class in London, and having always been quite sporty I loved the physical challenge. I then spent a few years trying out different yoga classes wherever and whenever I could fit them into my busy work and social life.
In 2009, a flatmate convinced me to join him at an Ashtanga yoga class – I muddled my way through the class and didn’t really know what to make of it but I knew that I would go back for more. I was also becoming increasingly curious about what yoga was offering me in addition to the physical aspects. This prompted me to undertake first a general yoga teacher training with Camyoga, followed by Ashtanga yoga teacher training with John Scott, and Hot Yoga teacher training with Camyoga.
I teach Ashtanga, Hatha, and Hot Yoga at several locations in and around Cambridge, including FitnessWorks STUDIO in Hauxton, Ashtanga Yoga Cambridge, and Camyoga.
